The clock is ticking! Have you filed your taxes yet? Every day, JDBC Tax Services provides a friendly Facebook reminder and a helpful tip to prepare for April 15. From their Milwaukee offices, JDBC Tax Services work with clients to help them stop wasting money on taxes they shouldn’t be paying through: engagement, education and offering services that support tax savings strategies.
JDBC Tax Services, run by John Leidy, is the only nationally Certified LGBT Business Enterprise accounting firm in Wisconsin by the NGLCC.
Tax Strategist and Business Coach, John Leidy tells us more about his Certified LGBT Business Enterprise:
Tell us a bit more about yourself and what you love do.
I consider myself in the Financial Education business. My goal is to help everyone, but especially business owners, to understand their money better, make better decisions and ultimately plan and pay less tax.
Why did you decide to join the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber?
I wanted to be a part of an organization that promotes diversity and inclusion everywhere. I enjoy the feeling of inclusion from being a member of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
My passion is to help people understand their tax situations better so they can make better decisions and stop wasting money on taxes they shouldn’t be paying. I especially enjoy working with small business owners by helping them understand their businesses better through Books Coaching followed by Tax Strategy implementation and management to reduce their tax burdens. I enjoy the people I get to work and build relationships with, above all.
How would you most like people to remember your company?
I’d like people to remember JDBC as a disrupter in the accounting and tax business.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
When you meet someone new, it’s not about getting them as a client. It’s about building a relationship.
Besides that advice, what do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur?
I wish I had known the complexity of starting a business is very challenging and a very different thought process than I originally expected. Looking back, I wish I did a better job of surrounding myself with people who are smarter than me, especially in the areas of business ownership that I am not very good at, like marketing, for instance.
When work or life get stressful, how do you relax?
I do pour over coffee each morning to start my day and make sure I close out my day every day. And sometimes there’s wine.
Over the past several years I have really enjoyed learning about the history of Milwaukee and the progress that has been made through various media outlets and simple walking around and exploring what Milwaukee has to offer. And when I travel, I find myself doing the same where I visit because I find the people, cultures and history so interesting.
If you had to choose another career today, what would it be and why?
I’ve always been interested and design and architecture. That’s what I enjoy about going to new places.
One last question: what do you enjoy most about being a member of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber?
The diverse community involved with the chamber and the relationships I have built.
It’s a personal struggle for everyone at times to be comfortable with ourselves no matter who we are. With the Chamber, I feel like a part of something that is bigger than me and that my contribution is valued.
