Each year, the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce selects a diverse and talented cohort of Wisconsin’s LGBTQ+ college students to participate in our Emerging Leaders Program. This program is an effort to help develop and prepare the next generation of LGBTQ+ professionals and business owners.
The Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce is excited to launch the fifth year of our Emerging Leaders mentoring program.
The goal of the Emerging Leaders Program is to support LGBTQ+ college students (both graduate and undergraduate) in professional development by matching them with professional mentors belonging to the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber. The Emerging Leaders Program helps students gain knowledge of various careers and helps prepare LGBTQ+ students for being an out professional in the workplace and the next generation of leaders.
The program runs from October 2020 to May 2021. Each month, mentors and mentees will meet to discuss topics such as: being an out professional, resume review, and other industry-specific topics. The time commitment for this program is expected to be at least 2 hours per month.
Mentors and Mentees are expected to:
- Meet in a regular basis over the program’s course
- Develop mentorship goals for the duration of the program
- Participate in different opportunities such as job shadows, resume review, and mock interviews
Applications for the program are due October 5, 2020. Those selected in to the program are asked to attend a virtual kickoff event on the evening of October 15 to be paired with a mentor. Mentees will be paired with mentors based on information provided during enrollment, such as areas of interest, future career interest, and professional goals.
The program kickoff will include an orientation for mentors and mentees to discuss program structure and expectations. The first mentor-mentee meeting should take place after the program begins in October. Monthly meetings are recommended for the ongoing program, but each pairing is encouraged to determine the appropriate meeting schedule that works best for them.
Mentors and mentees will be provided with resources to guide their meetings and the development of their mentoring relationship. Mentors and mentees will set their own agendas and cadence for in-person or virtual meetings. The Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce will provide periodic check-ins with mentors and mentees to ensure connectivity and program satisfaction. All mentors and mentees will complete a mentorship plan for 2020-2021 year including goals and meeting agreements.
Applications are due by October 5, 2020. Questions can be directed to Kat Klawes by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
