The Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce and Herzing University-Brookfield today announced a scholarship for LGBT individuals working in the healthcare industry. The Pride in Healthcare scholarship opens up new possibilities for members of the Greater Milwaukee LGBT community to pursue careers in healthcare and further raise awareness among all healthcare professionals of the need for increased cultural understanding when caring for and supporting coworkers of the LGBT population.

The fifty-percent scholarships provide half-off tuition, up to $15,000, through Herzing University's Brookfield campus for LGBT employees of three Chamber members in southeastern Wisconsin – Aurora Health Care, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin health network.

“This scholarship will allow employees at three of our Chamber members the opportunity to get the skills they need to advance their career to the next level and help build the next generation of LGBTQ leaders in the health care industry,” said Jason Rae, President & CEO of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce.

Pride in Healthcare scholarship applications are now being accepted by the LGBT Chamber of Commerce and must be submitted online at https://go.herzing.edu/pride-Scholarship by August 2, 2019. Applications include short essay questions and require a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s current employer.

“Herzing University is committed to helping LGBT students get the training and education they need to move ahead in their careers, as well as to helping build the most diverse and inclusive healthcare industry we can,” said Jarvis Racine, Campus President at Herzing University-Brookfield. “We hope many members of the LGBT community working at these outstanding institutions take advantage of this opportunity.”

A committee will review all scholarship applications and select the recipients. Students receiving the scholarship must apply to Herzing University-Brookfield for admittance beginning in the fall 2019 semester and enroll in any of the following programs:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • RN-BSN Completion program
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)
  • Medical Assisting
  • Medical Office Administration
  • Insurance Billing & Coding
  • Healthcare Management (HCM)
  • Health Information Management (HIM)
  • MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Management

In addition to receiving the scholarship, recipients will be asked to volunteer five hours per month to support the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce and its work to build a strong, diverse business community.

MILWAUKEE – This week, the award-winning Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce announced the launch of its new Business Leadership Academy. The Business Leadership Academy is a year-long program focused on developing and fostering the next generation of LGBTQ and allied leaders in the workplace.

“Today’s business environment for both small businesses and corporations requires leadership skills like effective communication, creativity, collaboration and the ability to motivate,” said Jason Rae, President & CEO of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. “We want to help our members make sure they have the knowledge and tools to grow in their roles.”

The 2019 Business Leadership Academy will meet monthly from February to December on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. These workshops will be held in the Milwaukee area. This past summer, the LGBT Chamber released a study showing that organizations and businesses with one or more LGBT people in senior leadership positions report higher overall firm performance than organizations with no LGBT leadership. The study was commissioned by the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce and conducted by researchers at Marquette University.

“The study showed what we have been saying for years -- having LGBT people in leadership positions, whether it as a CEO, a business owner, a part of senior management or on the Board of Directors, is good for a business’s bottom line,” said Jason Rae, President & CEO of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. “We’re launching the Business Leadership Academy to ensure we have great LGBT leaders who can be in these business leadership roles.”

MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce today announced the winners of its 2018 Business Awards, a program that recognizes the contributions made by Chamber members to building a more diverse and inclusive business community in Wisconsin.

    This award is given to an LGBT-owned business that is a member of the Chamber, is an active participant in building a more diverse business community in Wisconsin and has a proven track record of success and involvement. MOXIE Food + Drink, is a certified LGBT Business Enterprise by the NGLCC and has been an active participant in numerous LGBT Chamber events, including Out in the Kitchen for several years. They are dedicated to building an inclusive restaurant that welcomes all people.
  • Allied Business of the Year: Short Stack Eatery (Madison, WI)
    This award is given to an allied-owned business that is a member of the Chamber, is an active participant in building a more diverse business community in Wisconsin and has a proven track record of success and involvement. Short Stack Eatery has been an active Chamber member and a participant in the newly formed Hospitality Council. They have participated actively in Chamber events, including hosting a Coffee Connection, and have worked intentionally to support all customers, particularly trans individuals.
  • Nonprofit Organization of the Year: Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin (Menasha, WI)
    This award is given to a nonprofit organization that is a member of the Chamber, with a proven track record of success and involvement and a commitment to building a diverse community. Goodwill NCW has participated actively in the Chamber as a gold founding member since 2016, advocating tirelessly for inclusion of all people and advancing a diverse business community. Goodwill NCW was a founding supporter of the Wisconsin Businesses for Equality campaign, has hosted nearly all of the Chamber’s Lunch & Learns in the Fox Valley, and participated in the Chamber’s LGBTQ+ Career Fair.
  • Business Leader of the Year: Leonard Sobczak, Eastmore Real Estate & Wisconsin Gazette (Milwaukee, WI)
    This award is given to a hard-working and dedicated individual who has had a positive professional and personal impact on building a diverse business community in Wisconsin. Leonard Sobczak has been an active and forceful leader in growing the LGBT community for years and has been an instrumental part of the Chamber since the beginning. The owner of two businesses that belong to the Chamber, he served as one of the original Co-Chairs for the Chamber’s Steering Committee when it launched. He has been one of Wisconsin’s most forceful business leaders calling for full inclusion of all people.
  • Advocate of the Year: Shiva Bidar-Sielaff of UW Health (Madison, WI)
    This award is given to an individual who has been a strong advocate for inclusion and diversity within the larger business community. Shiva Bidar-Sielaff has been an active ally supporting a diverse business community throughout the state. She is the first Chief Diversity Officer of UW Health and has worked with the Chamber and the larger business community to find ways to build intersectionality. She has been a regular and active participant in the Chamber’s Leadership Council. In addition, she has been a leader through her role as an Alder for the City of Madison.

“Each winner demonstrates a strong commitment to diversity in the workplace, has a proven record of community involvement, and has worked to positively grow the LGBT and allied business community in Wisconsin,” added Rae.

The awards will be presented at the Chamber’s Anniversary Celebration and Business Showcase on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee. The event runs from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. and the presentation of awards will take place around 6:45 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce is an organization of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and LGBT-allied businesses, corporations and professionals throughout the state of Wisconsin.
